The Red Sox acquired righthanded pitcher Matt McShane from the Pirates in exchange for Chase Shugart, who made his debut on the mound in 2024. In 8⅔ innings, Shugart carried a 4.15 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP for his six appearances. He also appeared in 36 games (five starts) for Triple A Worcester, going 6-2 with a 4.46 ERA, surrendering 65 hits and 35 earned runs in 70⅔ innings.

The Pirates drafted McShane, 22, in the 13th round of last year’s MLB draft out of Saint Joseph’s University. McShane also spent two seasons (2023-24) pitching for the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod League. McShane did not pitch for a Pirates affiliate following the draft.
