MLB insider says Red Sox are one of two teams to watch in Alex Bregman sweepstakes

The market for Alex Bregman is getting smaller, and the Red Sox are among the few teams that could seriously pursue the two-time All-Star third baseman according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

“The two teams I would look at are the Red Sox and the Tigers,” Feinsand said during a recent episode of MLB tonight.

The 30-year-old infielder has spent the last three seasons with the Astros. He’s a 2024 Gold Glove winner and a two-time World Series champion. He’s a career .272 hitter, and has driven in 93 or more runs in five of the last eight seasons.

Feinsand said the Tigers have an “obvious connection” to Bregman with manager AJ Hinch, who used to manage the Astros and won a title with the franchise in 2017. He said Bregman would be a good fit there because the Tigers need a third baseman, but added that he’s not sure if they would be willing to spend what it would take to land him.

The Red Sox have the money, but the positional fit is less clear, Feinsand said. Boston has reportedly been open to using Triston Casas as a trade piece, but has not been able to make a deal work yet.

“We know that they have money to spend. They were in on Juan Soto,” Feinsand said. “They just gave Walker Buehler some money. They traded for Garrett Crochet. That was prospects, not money. So, there is money there.

“The question is: Do they want to bring in Bregman, move Devers to first and use Casas as a trade chip? Because if not with Casas at first and Devers at third, then there’s not really a fit for Bregman.”

Earlier this month, WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported that the Red Sox were targeting Bregman. Bradford said the Red Sox could play him at second base, a position where the Red Sox have less stability.

The Red Sox drafted Bregman out of high school, but he chose to keep his college commitment and attended LSU. Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was the Astros’ bench coach when they won the title in 2017, praised Bregman for his versaitility.

“Alex is a good player, man. He’s a complete player,” Cora said. “He’s been on winning teams his whole career. Good defender. Offensively, he’s really good. He’s a guy a lot of people are talking about. I do believe he can impact a big league team, a championship-caliber team. He’s that type of player.”
