Report: Red Sox’ attempt to trade Tristan Casas for pitching was ‘shot down’ by Seattle
The Red Sox reportedly tried to swap Casas for Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo.
According to two reports, the Red Sox are not done searching for additional arm talent after landing Garrett Crochet.
According to both the Seattle Times and MLB.com, the Red Sox attempted to trade slugger Triston Casas to the Mariners in exchange for a starting pitcher.
“Earlier this offseason the Mariners shot down a one-for-one offer that would have sent one of Seattle’s young starters, Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo, to Boston for 24-year-old first baseman Triston Casas,” the Seattle Times report reads.
Earlier this month. Alex Speier of The Boston Globe wrote that the Red Sox have been open to using Casas as a trade chip to bring in pitching. Speier also said the odds of Casas being traded are low.
The 6-foot-5, 244-pound first baseman hit 24 home runs and drove in 65 RBI while hitting .263 during his rookie season in 2023. He finished third in the AL Rookie of the Year voting that season.
However, injuries hampered his 2024 campaign. He appeared in just 63 games after suffering a rib cartilage tear. He finished with 13 home runs, 32 RBI, and a .241 batting average.
Miller, 26, has a 20-15 career record over two seasons as a starter. He went 12-8 last season with a 2.94 ERA, which was good for eighth in the MLB.
Woo, 24, went 9-3 last season and finished with a 2.89 ERA. He pitched 121.1 innings, which was below the threshold to qualify for league leaders. MLB pitchers must pitch 1.0 inning per scheduled league game to qualify.
The Red Sox traded four prospects, including catcher Kyle Teel, to the White Sox in exchange for Crochet earlier this week.
They are reportedly keeping their eyes out for other arm talent to add.
