The Red Sox have officially taken a bold step to addressing the team’s need to add to its pitching staff.

According to multiple sources, including Boston Globe Red Sox reporter Julian McWilliams and ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Red Sox have agreed to a deal with the White Sox to acquire left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet.

Update (3:37 pm): The Red Sox have confirmed the deal:

As for what the Red Sox are set to trade to Chicago, McWilliams noted that Boston is set to send catcher prospect Kyle Teel as part of the deal. Passan added that the White Sox “will be receiving four prospects from the Boston Red Sox, all of whom are highly regarded.”

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the full prospect return for the White Sox is Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez.

Teel, 22, was a first-round pick by Boston in 2023. The talented catcher is currently rated the fourth best prospect in the Red Sox system, and the 25th best prospect in Major League Baseball.

Montgomery (fifth) and Meidroth (eighth) are also top-10 prospects in Boston’s minor league system. Montgomery was the team’s first-round pick in 2024, and has upside as both a hitter and pitcher.

“It’s a big return for Chicago,” Passan explained, “but for a pitcher like Crochet — an ace-level starter with two years of cheap control — that’s the price to pay.”

The Red Sox desperately needed to add help to the team’s pitching staff, which struggled through an inconsistent 2024 season. That Crochet is a lefty is also a huge plus, as the team’s current projected starting rotation consists of all right-handed pitchers (though he also has experience as a reliever).

Crochet, 25, was originally drafted by the White Sox in the first round in 2020. Though his win-loss record was poor in 2024 (6-12), it was largely due to circumstances beyond his control playing for the worst team in MLB history.

His fundamental stats showcase a quality pitcher, as he posted a 3.58 ERA and averaging 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings. He sports a fastball (which averaged 97.2 mph in 2024), a cutter, a changeup, a sweeper, and a sinker. As he was in his first full season after returning from Tommy John surgery, he was named the 2024 American League Comeback Player of the Year.
