Red Sox place Rafael Devers on injured list
The move effectively ends his season.
The Red Sox placed third baseman Rafael Devers on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, the club announced Saturday afternoon.
With eight games in nine days remaining, the move effectively ends his season, barring a miraculous Red Sox surge to make the playoffs.
Devers, 27, has hit .272 with 28 home runs and 83 RBI in 138 games this season. The left-handed hitter has made 130 starts at third base and eight as the designated hitter.
He left Friday’s game against the Twins in discomfort. Manager Alex Cora indicated that it “doesn’t make sense” to push him given the variables.
“He made some adjustments throughout and yesterday he was like, there wasn’t much there,” Cora told reporters Saturday. “Today, actually, we talked about something I saw mechanically, and he was very honest about it. The bat speed, it wasn’t there. We can see it.”
To fill his spot on the roster, the Red Sox recalled catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper.
As of Saturday afternoon, the Red Sox are 76-78 and five games behind the Twins for the third Wild Card spot. The Tigers and Mariners are in front of them, so it would take a true miracle.
