With a week to go before Major League Baseball’s July 30 trade deadline, the Red Sox plan — whether to be buyer or seller — remains largely a mystery. Still, a few potential moves are starting to come into view.

One of them is a familiar name: James Paxton. The 35-year-old was recently designated for assignment by the Dodgers despite being tied with Gavin Stone and Tyler Glasnow for the most starts this season for Los Angeles with 18. In that time, he’s compiled an 8-2 record with a 4.43 ERA.

According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, the Red Sox could try to re-acquire the pitcher who made 19 starts for Boston in 2023.

“There is a strong likelihood the Red Sox get in the mix for James Paxton,” wrote Bradford.

Of course, Paxton could become a fairly sought-after player.

“There will be competition for Paxton’s services considering he represents a piece of the puzzle more than a few contending teams are thirsty for,” noted Bradford. “An inning-eating veteran starter who can help a club get to the finish line.”

Given his DFA status, the Dodgers have seven days to either trade or place him on “outright or unconditional release waivers.”

Paxton went 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA for the Red Sox in 2023. He was named A.L. Pitcher of the Month in June, 2023, going 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA. However, he fell off in the second half of the season, posting a 2-4 record with a 6.98 ERA in his final nine starts.
