Add another Red Sox injury to the team’s long list of ailments players have experienced in 2024.

Star third baseman Rafael Devers was removed from Saturday’s 6-1 loss against the Chicago White Sox because of knee soreness. He stayed in the game, both fielding and batting, until the eighth inning when catcher Reese McGuire pinch-hit for him.

Manager Alex Cora didn’t sound overly concerned about Devers’ knee when asked about his status postgame, but he said he expects the 27-year-old to miss Sunday’s series finale.

“His knee is bothering him, so we took him out. Probably give him tomorrow off,” Cora said. “Nothing seriously, but obviously when he expressed that, we have to be smart about it. Hopefully there’s nothing worse than just a little bit of soreness, and he’ll be ready.

“I don’t think it’s as bad as he was early in the season, but he’s very honest about his body. We’ll take care of him.”

Devers told reporters after the game that he will not play on Sunday, but that he’s hopeful to return on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies at Fenway Park.

This is not the first time Devers has dealt with a knee issue this season. He missed a handful of games in April because of a bone bruise in his left knee, but he avoided landing on the injured list.

Devers also endured shoulder soreness at the beginning of the season, something that dated back to this year’s spring training.

Despite his ailments in 2024, the left-handed hitter has been swinging a decent bat. Devers leads Boston in home runs (13), batting average (.284), and .932 OPS (.932). He has collected the Red Sox’ second-most RBI with 32 behind Ceddanne Rafaela’s 37.
