Red Sox starter Brayan Bello opens up about ‘frustrating’ outing vs. White Sox
Bello gave up nine hits and five earned runs in less than five innings of work.
Brayan Bello has a promising career ahead of him, and carved out a spot in the top of the Red Sox rotation as just 25 years old. On Saturday, though, he had a game to forget.
Starting against the then-16-48 White Sox, Bello gave up nine hits in under five innings of work. He fought through a rough fifth inning in which he loaded the bases, and tried to get out of the bind, but let up a grand slam instead.
After that hit, Bello slammed his glove on the mound, letting out some frustration at the way his start ended.
“I just really wanted to get that out and get through the inning, but I wasn’t able to,” Bello said through a translator. “I’d love to get that pitch back, just didn’t execute it the way I should have.”
Bello is now 6-3 as a starter this season, but hasn’t been at his best in his last two starts. He gave up eight hits and four runs, all earned, against the Detroit Tigers on June 2.
Saturday’s performance, though, was worse in Bello’s opinion.
“This is definitely probably one of my more frustrating starts,” Bello said. “A lot of difficult things happened, but it’s the big leagues and you got to move on.”
Boston has a few strong starters in its arsenal to help take the load off Bello’s shoulders. Still, the third-year major leaguer has much stronger expectations for himself than what Saturday showed.
With the loss, the Red Sox dip back below .500, sitting at 32-33. Boston has a chance to split the series on Sunday.
