The updates continue to roll in regarding Triston Casas’ rib ailment. And none of them have alleviated fears for a Red Sox roster already stung several times by the injury bug in 2024.
The slugging first baseman was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday afternoon, with Casas suffering a left rib strain during Boston’s 4-2 win over the Pirates on Saturday.
He appeared to suffer the injury during his first at-bat on Saturday, wincing after fouling off a pitch. Casas eventually drew a walk, but was later pulled from the game.
Casas will return to Boston on Sunday to undergo imaging to determine the severity of his injury. But the 24-year-old infielder didn’t have an optimistic update when speaking to reporters ahead of Sunday’s game at PNC Park.
"I'm in a lot of pain right now….after that 3-1 swing just came up with a lot of pain in my midsection."

“I’m in a lot of pain right now,” Casas told reporters before Boston’s series finale against the Pirates on Sunday, as seen on NESN. “Unfortunate event last game, in that first at-bat, after that 3-1 swing, just came up with a lot of pain in my midsection. We’re getting the details a little more in-depth as we speak.
“And I’m going to Boston today to get some reevaluation done, and some more testing. So we’ll know more about it, but for right now, just a lot of pain in my midsection.”
Alex Cora offered an ominous update shortly after Boston’s win in Pittsburgh on Saturday, even before the Red Sox formally placed Casas on the injured list.
“No, he’s not doing OK … we’re checking on him, we’ll know more over the course of the night,” Cora said. “When he came in [to the dugout], he said ‘I can play defense, but you need somebody to hit for me.’”
An extended absence for Casas stands as another significant blow for a Red Sox lineup that has been decimated by injuries already this month. Casas is batting .244 this season with six home runs and 10 RBI.
The Red Sox are already playing without several other key cogs in the heart of their lineup. Tyler O’Neill remains on the seven-day injured list due to concussion-related symptoms, while Rafael Devers missed his 10th game of the season on Sunday while dealing with several issues, including nagging knee and shoulder injuries.
Earlier this month, the Red Sox lost Trevor Story to season-ending shoulder surgery after the veteran dislocated his shoulder and suffered a fracture to his glenoid rim while diving for a ball against the Angels on April 5.
