Injuries incoming: Red Sox’ Rafael Devers to undergo MRI, Tyler O’Neill to IL
Devers opted to undergo an MRI as he seeks "peace of mind" with his knee injury.
Red Sox’ Rafael Devers will undergo an MRI on his left knee Thursday, manager Alex Cora told reporters.
After exiting Tuesday’s matchup against the Guardians due to knee discomfort, it appeared Devers was in the clear when he appeared back in the lineup the following night. However, Cora revealed the infielder would receive imaging to rule out structural damage and provide “peace of mind,” per NESN.
Devers has battled a string of injuries already early on in the season. After dealing with a shoulder injury earlier in the month, he collided with Tyler O’Neill on Monday.
Two of the Red Sox’ best hitters, Devers and O’Neill knocked heads in the outfield at the top of the seventh inning, requiring attention from multiple trainers. The run-in landed O’Neill on the injured list (and gave him eight stitches), though he cleared concussion protocol and should be back in time for the upcoming road trip on Friday. Cora says the outfielder says his status is still “day to day.”
As for Devers, he “didn’t feel great yesterday,” Cora said ahead of Thursday’s finale against the Guardians.
“He felt like he wasn’t able to stay on his leg,” Cora added. “He was out in front. I talked to him last night and said, ‘Let’s do this so we know.’”
O’Neill heads to the seven-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday. They activated outfielder Rob Refsnyder off the 10-day injured list to fill his spot. Refsnyder missed the start of the season due to a toe fracture.
After notching their first complete-game shutout win at home in nearly seven years, the Red Sox wrap up their four-game series against the Guardians Thursday at Fenway Park.
