Watch the Red Sox’ Opening Day ceremony honoring curse-breaking 2004 team
The Red Sox ceremony also honors the lives of Tim and Stacy Wakefield, as well as Larry Lucchino.
With another summer at Fenway Park set to commence, the Red Sox are honoring some legends of the past as part of their Opening Day ceremony on Tuesday afternoon.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Boston’s 2004 World Series championship, several players, coaches, and personnel from that history-making roster are being honored as part of the pregame ceremonies before the Red Sox’ game against the Orioles.
Along with celebrating the roster that helped erase an 86-year curse with the Red Sox, the ceremony will also include a special tribute honoring the lives, legacies, and impacts of Tim Wakefield and his wife, Stacy.
Tim Wakefield, the beloved knuckleballer who won two World Series over his 17 seasons in Boston, passed away on Oct. 1, 2023 at the age of 57 due to a seizure following surgery for brain cancer. Stacy Wakefield passed away on Feb. 28, 2024 after battling pancreatic cancer. She was 53 years old.
Fans who attend Tuesday’s home opener will receive a Wakefield-themed keepsake in the form of navy blue, heart-shaped pins featuring his jersey number in red.
In addition to the 2004 Red Sox celebration and the tribute to Wakefield, the Red Sox’ home opener will also include a flyover from the Vermont Air National Guard’s 158FW (Fighter Wing) Unit.
Fans at home can watch the pregame ceremony on NESN, as well as a live stream above.
First pitch against the Orioles is set for 2:10 p.m.
