Red Sox reportedly sign rookie Ceddanne Rafaela to 8-year extension

Given his lack of MLB service time, Rafaela was not set to hit free agency until after the 2029 season.

Craig Breslow and the Red Sox have reportedly locked up another young piece of Boston’s future.

Just a month after doling out a six-year, $55 million contract extension to righty Brayan Bello in spring training, Boston has reportedly handed out a new long-term deal to outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela — per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

According to MLB’s Mark Feinsand, the Red Sox and Rafaela agreed to an eight-year extension worth $50 million. According to those terms, Rafaela will be signed with Boston through the 2031 season.

The 23-year-old Rafaela has already made a sizable impact over 38 games in Boston thanks to his impressive fielding ability — especially out in center field.

By putting pen to paper on this deal, Rafaela earns a nice pay bump and some added security, while Boston keeps a talented player through the first few years of his UFA status on a contract that could be a bargain if he lives up to his potential.

Rafaela, who made Boston’s Opening Day roster after a strong spring training, is batting .233 with a double, two triples, and five RBI over 10 games so far this year.

Even with his 5-foot-9 frame, Rafaela does boast some pop at the plate — slugging 20 home runs and driving in 79 runs over 108 combined games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in 2023.

However, he has been hampered at times by his knack for chasing pitches — striking out 103 times and walking 26 times over 485 plate appearances between Portland and Worcester last summer. Over 35 plate appearances so far this season with Boston, Rafaela has struck out nine times.

But if Rafaela can add more discipline to his approach at the plate, he could develop into a five-tool player with the Red Sox — given his already evident speed and defensive capabilities.

Rafaela made two highlight-reel catches during Boston’s three-game sweep of the A’s last week, including an 11th-inning snag that helped his team preserve a 5-4 victory on Tuesday.

As noted by Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe, Rafaela ranks in the 75th percentile in outs above average — a range-based metric that displays how many outs a player recorded over his peers, per Baseball Savant.
