Nearly one full day after injuring his shoulder, Trevor Story’s diagnosis has been revealed.

The shortstop suffered a dislocated left shoulder against the Angels on Friday, the Red Sox announced Saturday night. The team placed Story on the 10-day injured list and recalled infielder David Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester as a corresponding move.

Story underwent an MRI in Seattle on Saturday afternoon while Hamilton traveled from the East Coast to Anaheim.

The 31-year-old hurt his left shoulder after diving for a ground ball in the fourth inning on Friday night. He was in a considerable amount of visible pain while grabbing his shoulder and remained on the ground for some time, before exiting the game.

Upon diving for the grounder, Story said his body weight landed on his shoulder.

“Frustrating, man,” Story said postgame. He was not wearing a sling on his non-throwing arm. “A lot of emotions. … A lot of frustration. … Pretty painful.”

Infield teammate Rafael Devers physically cringed while watching Story hit the grass.

Story’s timeline for return and whether or not he’ll undergo surgery is unknown, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters on Saturday.

Breslow also referred to the ailment as a “sublaxtion”, which is a “partial or incomplete dislocation,” according to the Journal of Chiropractic Humanities.

In the meantime, manager Alex Cora laid out his plan regarding who will play the middle infield for the foreseeable future.

“We’re going to platoon at short,” Cora said. “We’re going to platoon at second. … We’ll be creative.”

He didn’t rule out the possibility of moving Ceddane Rafaela to shortstop. Rafaela has played center field to start the season, but he can also play up the middle.
