Lucas Giolito to travel to Alabama Monday, seeking second opinion on elbow

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that "surgery is a possibility" for the newly-signed pitcher.

Despite reports that Lucas Giolito suffered a partially torn UCL that will likely require surgery, the Red Sox are holding out for a second opinion on their pitcher’s health.

Giolito is set to travel to Birmingham, Ala. Monday to meet with Dr. Jeffery Dugas, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports injuries. Manager Alex Cora offered a status update on Giolito a day after chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said the injury could sideline him for the season.

Speaking to the media Wednesday afternoon at Fenway South, Cora said the team won’t make a decision about Giolito until next week.

“Surgery is a possibility,” Cora said, per the Globe’s Julian McWilliams. “We’ll have more when he goes over there.”

Boston signed the 29-year-old pitcher to a two year, $38.5 million contract this offseason, one of the few efforts they made to add veteran talent to the bullpen.

Now, Giolito’s season could be over before it starts.

The former All-Star has remained relatively durable during his 12 years in the majors with the exception of undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2012 shortly after he was drafted by Washington. Over the last three seasons, Giolito made 30-plus starts and led the majors last season with 33.
