Alex Cora confirmed the most recent report on Red Sox contact with Jordan Montgomery

"I’m not going to get into specifics but yeah, it’s part of the process."

The Red Sox pursuit of free agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery was a subplot throughout the offseason, especially as the 31-year-old left-handed starter was reportedly living in Boston for a period of time. With spring training now underway, the rumors of him potentially signing with Boston have continued.

One of the latest reports was actually confirmed by Alex Cora on Monday. Per Christopher Smith of MassLive, Cora said that the Red Sox had spoken with Montgomery in a Zoom video. It was a follow-up on an earlier update from ESPN baseball reporter Buster Olney.

“Buster is right,” Cora told reporters. “We zoomed with him. But we’ve been zooming with a lot of people throughout the offseason. I’m not going to get into specifics but yeah, it’s part of the process.”

The meeting took place shortly before the team began spring training earlier in February.

Montgomery, coming off a season in which he posted a 3.20 ERA and helped the Rangers (who he joined at midseason) go on to win the first World Series title in team history, would be an upgrade for the Red Sox rotation currently devoid of lefties.

Also on Monday, baseball insider Peter Gammons added his own report to the mix. Per Gammons, a National League executive told him that “we hear the Red Sox and [Montgomery’s agent] Scott Boras had a good meeting recently and may get some deal eventually done on Jordan Montgomery.”

Granted, the Montgomery rumors have been floating around for months. Still, the reports of possible Red Sox interest have seen an uptick in recent days. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported last week that Montgomery was being pursued by Boston (but also several other teams in need of pitching help).
