The Red Sox honored late great Tim Wakefield on Sunday prior to their official Grapefruit League home opener against the Minnesota Twins.

Wakefield died in October at age 57 after a battle with brain cancer.

Narrator Tom Caron noted that Wakefield first threw in front of the Red Sox in a Spring Training game in Fort Myers in 1995. Boston signed him shortly after, marking the start of a 17-year stint with the organization.

“In that time, Tim became the ultimate teammate in the clubhouse, a fierce competitor on the mound, and a kind soul in the community,” Caron said.

Caron highlighted Wakefield’s two World Series titles and Roberto Clemente Award in 2010.

Wakefield’s off-field contributions also began in Florida, at the Space Coast Early Intervention Center. He was the first Jimmy Fund captain, then the Red Sox Foundation’s honorary chairman after he retired.

“His absence has left a hole in our hearts,” Caron said. “Please join us in a moment of reflection and silence.”
