The Red Sox added a third catcher to their 40-man roster on Friday.

Boston acquired catcher Tyler Heineman from the Mets in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced.

Heineman, 32, appeared in 22 games between the Pirates and Blue Jays in 2023. He batted in all 22 and caught in 20 of them.

The switch hitter saw 42 games of minor league action last season for the two teams’ Triple-A affiliates. Heineman batted .230 in 135 at-bats and caught in 41 of those contests.

At the major league level, Heineman owns a career .989 fielding percentage behind home plate (96 games). His minor league fielding percentage at catcher stands at .993 (612 games).

Heineman, who was designated for assignment by the Mets on Jan. 30, joins a Red Sox roster alongside two other catchers: Reese McGuire and Connor Wong.

However, the team’s latest addition to the corps has one minor league option remaining. This means he can be sent down to Triple-A before the regular season begins and eventually be called up to the big leagues as a depth option.

To make room for Heineman on the Red Sox’s roster, the team designated right-handed pitcher Max Castillo for assignment.

Castillo was originally claimed off waivers by Boston on Jan. 2.

Boston now has 22 pitchers on its major league roster.
