The 2020 Red Sox season hasn’t had many bright spots. Sunday was one of them.

Rookie Bobby Dalbec hit a two-run home run in the second at-bat of his major league debut.

The home run came in the third inning when Dalbec, a right-handed hitter, hit one off Nationals pitcher Javy Guerra along the right-field line and into the bleachers to give the Red Sox an 8-2 lead.

Dalbec, who struck out in his first at-bat, was called up from the team’s Alternate Site in Pawtucket to play first base after they traded first baseman Mitch Moreland to the Padres earlier on Sunday.

Dalbec is considered to be one of the top prospects in the Red Sox system. The 25-year-old is ranked as the Red Sox’ third-best prospect by MLB.com and the fifth-best prospect by SoxProspects.com.

Dalbec, who was drafted by the Sox in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, has shown his power in the minor leagues over the last couple of seasons. He hit 32 home runs over the course of the 2018 season while splitting time between the Single-A Salem Red Sox and the Double-A Portland SeaDogs. He hit 27 homers in 2019 while splitting time between Portland and the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox.
