The Cleveland Indians designated Hanley Ramirez for assignment Saturday.
The former Red Sox DH departed to make room on the Indians’ roster for star shortstop Francisco Lindor, who has missed the regular season thus far with a strained right calf and sprained left ankle.

Ramirez made Cleveland’s 25-man roster out of spring training after being released by the Red Sox last May. The 35-year-old sat out the rest of last season after Boston inserted J.D. Martinez as the full-time DH. His four-year, $88 million deal with the Sox expired after the season.
In 15 spring training games this season, Ramirez batted .239 with two home runs. He hit two more homers early in the regular season, before slumping to a .184 batting average and .298 on-base percentage. The Indians had signed him to a low-risk, minor-league deal on Feb. 26.
