Morning sports update: David Price wasn’t sure what was happening when Tiger Woods’s win was announced at Fenway

In an eventful sports Sunday, the Celtics triumphed over the Pacers in Game 1 of their opening round playoff series, 84-74. The Red Sox defeated the Orioles, 4-0.
And Tiger Woods returned to the top of the golf world with a Masters win, giving him his 15th career major title.

David Price’s reaction to Tiger Woods: Tiger Woods’s triumph at the 2019 Masters drew reactions from across the sports (and non-sports) world. At Fenway Park, the Red Sox were in the middle of a game against the Orioles. David Price was pitching for Boston, and in the process of putting up seven scoreless innings as the Red Sox went on to win, 4-0.
Yet during the middle of the game, fans stopped to cheer an announcement made on the center field scoreboard that Woods had won.

“I was downstairs, might’ve been after bottom five, I believe,” Price told reporters. “I hear a whole lot of cheering outside, and we have delayed TVs now everywhere, so I just kind of asked what happened. I thought somebody ran out on the field, a streaker, and J.T. Watkins, our video guy said Tiger won the Masters. Good job, Tiger. We messed up by not wearing red [jerseys] today. I’m happy he pulled that off.”
Price was excited for Woods’s redemption.
“That’s awesome. For him to endure everything he’s been through and get on top and win another Masters, we’re all pumped for him.”

On this day: In 1946, Greek runner Stylianos Kyriakides, who survived Nazi occupation of his country during World War II, returned to the Boston Marathon (where he’d failed to finish in 1938). In miraculous circumstances, Kyriakides defeated John A. Kelley to win. He used his fame to help bring aid to post-war Greece.
And in 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball. His debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers was a monumental moment in the history of American sports. He would hit .297 with 29 stolen bases in his first season in Brooklyn, winning the inaugural Rookie of the Year award.
