Stat of the Day: The Red Sox have not been shut out on Opening Day in any of the last 42 seasons (1977-2018), the second-longest active streak in the majors (New York Mets, 56)
Notes: This will be Sale’s fifth Opening Day start (2013-14 and 2016 with the White Sox, and 2018 with the Red Sox). In his previous four, he went 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA (6 ER/28.0 IP) . . . In the five seasons from 2014-18, the Red Sox had five different Opening Day starting pitchers (Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, David Price, Rick Porcello, Sale) . . . Of the 10 players in Red Sox’ Opening Day lineup last year, nine are still on the club’s roster. (Hanley Ramirez started at first base a year ago) . . . The Sox last had as many as eight players make consecutive Opening Day starts (regardless of position) from 1981-82, and they have never had as many as nine players do that . . . The Red Sox went 12-17-1 in spring training, including 6-4 in their final 10 games.
