Red Sox close to acquiring RHP Colten Brewer from Padres

The Red Sox are close to acquiring pitcher Colten Brewer from the San Diego Padres in exchange for infielder Esteban Quiroz, according to a major league source.

In 37 relief appearances with the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple A affiliate of the Padres, Brewer, 26, went 3-4 with a 3.75 ERA. The righthander had 63 strikeouts and walked 15 batters in 48 innings. He also made 11 appearances with the Padres, with 10 strikeouts and seven walks in 9⅔ innings.

Quiroz, 26, was signed by the Red Sox one year ago out of the Mexican League. He started at second base for the Mexican National Team in the World Baseball Classic.

In 24 games with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs last season, he batted .283 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs.

The left-handed hitter batted .293 with a .428 on-base percentage, .488 slugging percentage, .916 OPS, 11 homers, 23 doubles, and 49 RBIs in 89 games during 2017 for Leones de Yucatan of the Mexican League.
