Alex Cora: ‘We scored 16 at Yankee Stadium. Suck on it.’
The Red Sox manager recalled the team's playoff performance before Wednesday's victory lap.
Alex Cora seemed to revel in recalling the Red Sox’s 3-1 playoff record against the Yankees — particularly the 16-1 win in Game 3 of the ALDS — as his team readied for its World Series championship celebration parade Wednesday.
“We scored 16 at Yankee Stadium,” Cora told a crowd Wednesday at Fenway Park. “Suck on it.”
The choice words were among a few reflections he offered on the team’s playoff performance as they took on their New York rivals and later, the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers en route to securing the World Series title.
“Think about it: the New York Yankees, yeah the sky was falling. You know, we lost Game 2 and it was panicking here,” Cora said. “Everybody was like, ‘Whoa it’s over.'”
But it wasn’t.
“And then, for how much I care about those guys in Houston, well, we went to Houston and we swept them down there,” Cora said.
“And to finish it off, we go to this historic ballpark that holds 55,000 people,” he continued. “I played there for six years and I know how special Dodger Stadium is, and when Steve Pearce hit that home run in Game 5, it felt like we had 40,000 fans cheering for us at Dodger Stadium.
“It was an amazing run,” Cora told fans. “It was an amazing year, and you guys make it that special.”
