There’s another Steve Pearce, and he’s running to be governor of New Mexico
"They’re both great Americans."
According to a recent edit on his Wikipedia page, Steve Pearce is the new mayor of Los Angeles. He is also a U.S. congressman and candidate to be the next governor of New Mexico.
No, seriously though.
The Red Sox first baseman and World Series MVP shares his name with Rep. Steve Pearce, a fourth-term New Mexico Republican, who is his party’s nominee in the state’s gubernatorial election next Tuesday.
While the 35-year-old MLB journeyman was delivering pivotal, clutch hits in Los Angeles over the weekend, the 71-year-old 2nd District representative (who admittedly spells his full name, Stevan, differently) was touring the Land of Enchantment on a campaign bus. He did momentarily pause to express some support to his namesake during Saturday night’s Game 4.

Kevin Sheridan, a spokesman for the congressman’s campaign, says they haven’t necessarily seen a big impact from Pearce’s MVP performance. While they did notice an uptick in traffic to their website, the campaign employs “baseball” — and other related terms — as a negative keyword as a precautionary measure so that their ad budget isn’t wasted on people searching for the Red Sox player.
So even if the campaign for Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, doesn’t have to sound the alarms over an unexpected surge in Red Sox fans supporting her opponent, Sheridan says it “certainly doesn’t hurt, having a lot of good will out there towards a guy named Steve Pearce.”
“They’re both great Americans,” Sheridan, who, coincidentally, happens to a lifelong Red Sox fan, said Monday.
