Kevin Millar hijacked a WBZ interview before Game 1
"Cowboy up!"
2004 World Series Champion Kevin Millar took over a WBZ interview following Tuesday night’s World Series opener.
Speaking with reporters Dan Roche and Steve Burton, Millar explained his role in the renowned Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS against the Yankees. Current Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was chosen to pinch-run for Millar after his lead-off walk in the ninth inning and ultimately changed the narrative of the series.
Millar sarcastically downplayed his role in the ninth inning of that game 14 years ago, telling Burton and Roche, “You don’t want to tell everybody ‘I walked in ’04, champ, and without me nothing would’ve happened,’ you know what I’m sayin’? Why would I say that?”
When asked where is ’04 World Series ring was, Millar flaunted his wedding band and explained that he’s wearing the only ring that matters– but will be going back to his hotel, where he left his ring and wearing it for Wednesday’s game.
The former first baseman took total control of the interview about halfway through, sharing his thoughts on this year’s World Series matchup and not-so-subtly endorsing the Sox. At one point he says, “I showered with both those managers,” referring to Roberts and Red Sox manager Alex Cora, a detail on his former teammates which is probably TMI.
“The Dodgers are a great team and they are built like an American League club,” Millar said. “It’s going to be a great Series. Come on out to Fenway Park and root on your Boston Red Sox.”
Millar concluded his spiel with a traditional “Cowboy up!” and his prediction for the Series.
“Red Sox in five.”
