Zach Sullivan, a passionate 23-year-old Red Sox fan, had just woken up from shoulder surgery. Instantly, his mind went to the playoff matchup with the Yankees.

“I’m worried about the Red Sox,” Sullivan told his mother, who recorded a video of the exchange. When she reminded him that the series was over, and that the Yankees had been defeated, he offered several quotes that every member of Red Sox Nation can identify with:

  • “It was important to me that the Yankees’ season ended in a horrible way.”
  • “The Yankees are everything that’s wrong with sports.”
  • “Thank God the Yankees lost.”

Sullivan sent the video to his roommate, a Yankees fan, who tweeted it out. It quickly went viral.

“It’s really, just like, the funniest video that I’ve seen in a long time,” said Justin Diamond, Yankees fan and Sullivan’s friend, in an interview with WHDH. “It’s just all straight from the heart from him.”

According to Diamond, Sullivan’s response was fitting: “He’s just a straight egotistical Red Sox fan,” he said.

Sullivan was grateful that his mother recorded his post-surgery remarks.

“When I finally woke up and watched the video, I said to my mom, ‘This is great. We would have had nothing without you.'”
