“This is a time when it’s obviously tough for us right now, and that’s when you’ve got to look around the room and you’ve got to lean on each other and count on each other,” he continued. “We will do that. We’ve got to go out and just start playing well, start playing a more consistent brand of baseball, and trust the results will be there.”
Aaron Boone says Yankees are ‘too good’ to let Red Sox series define their season
“A tough way, obviously, to end a tough weekend."
After getting swept by the Red Sox, Yankees manager Aaron Boone says he’s not going to let his team’s recent struggles define their season.
“We’re too good,” he said after New York’s 5-4, 10-inning loss at Fenway Park Sunday. “This is a test we’re going through right now, there’s no question. We’re experiencing some adversity with being dinged up a little bit roster-wise, but we’ll also come out on the other side a lot tougher for this.”‘
Against Boston, New York was without two of the club’s more productive hitters in catcher Gary Sanchez and right-fielder Aaron Judge. Boone said he expects their respective returns to bolster the team’s lineup, but, until then, he stressed the team needs to turn the page — and he’s confident they will.
“We will move on from this,” Boone said. “I walk around that room every day and these are guys that are tough, that are tough-minded, that are really good at coming in here and flushing what happened the day before — regardless of result.”
With the four consecutive losses, the Yankees now trail the Red Sox by 9 1/2 games in the AL East. Boone said he hopes his team will eventually be able to look back on the series as “one that really brought [them] together and allowed [them] to grow even more as a club.” He expressed confidence in the roster moving forward.
Players echoed Boone’s sentiment.
“We’re going to keep battling, we’re going to keep playing ball,” closer Aroldis Chapman — who blew a save opportunity — said through an interpreter. “There’s no looking back. We lost these four games, but we have to keep playing.”
“Obviously, it’s a tough loss, but we can’t hang our heads,” reliever Masahiro Tanaka said through an interpreter. “Going through a long season, things like this happen, so just get back up and keep fighting.”
