Morning sports update: Alex Cora ‘not happy about’ how the Red Sox rainout was handled
"Honestly, it was tough."
After a 2 hour, 33 minute rain delay, the game between the Red Sox and Orioles on Wednesday night was postponed by rain. The Patriots open training camp at Gillette Stadium on Thursday.
Alex Cora ‘not happy about’ how the Red Sox rainout was handled
Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, and J.D. Martinez had already cleared the fence by the time the umpires called for the Camden Yards field to be covered by a tarp. The three Red Sox home runs — and a 5-0 second-inning lead — were washed away as Wednesday night’s game against the Orioles was postponed.
Manager Alex Cora took issue with the way the extended rain delay was handled and suggested the game should not have started in the first place.
“I’m annoyed about the whole three-game series,” Cora told reporters, per MassLive. “Honestly, it was tough. Rick [Porcello] had to wait for a while in a game with two outs in the first inning where there was a rain delay. It was a tough one. But we’ll turn the page, we’ll show up tomorrow and we’ll do what we do.”
The home team, in this case Baltimore, is responsible for deciding whether a game should start. Once the game begins, the umpires make the call to delay or postpone it. When Cora was asked if he was annoyed at the Orioles, he said, “Whoever handled it, yeah.”

“I feel for the team, actually,” Cora said. “I don’t care about the home runs. We have a 5-0 lead and one of our horses on the mound. It’s not that it’s a guaranteed win but we know where we’re at. Every game matters. It happens two days ago… a rain delay with two outs in the first inning, and it happened again tonight. I’m not happy about it.”
The game will be made up on Saturday, August 11 as part of a day-night doubleheader in Baltimore.
Alex Cora is genuinely ticked off about the rainout tonight. Probably as annoyed as I’ve seen him.
