Zach Britton owes Dustin Pedroia an apology

Major League Baseball acted swiftly and with a strong hand in suspending Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes for four games for throwing a pitch behind Manny Machado’s head in the eighth inning Sunday, two games after Dustin Pedroia had been spiked by Machado on a terrible slide.

Nobody believes Barnes when he says he missed his location. Christian Vazquez set up outside and was looking for something low and away. Barnes threw high and very inside. Barnes offered the usual defense after the game, saying he never intended to hit Machado in the head. Sox manager John Farrell echoed those statements, likely to protect his player. At least we hope that’s what he was doing.
