Red Sox hope not to follow same path as Tigers

The Tigers team that the Red Sox will play over the next four games represents an organization caught amidst a transition. Detroit resides in an awkward in-between time of perennial World Series ambitions now confronted with a period of uncertainty about whether to cling to life as a fringe contender or rebuild.

For the Red Sox, the primary significance of the four-game visit to Detroit lies in the opportunity to build upon their two season-opening victories. Yet beyond that immediate perspective, the Red Sox can also look at the current Tigers as a fascinating case study in the potential consequences of a full-speed-ahead commitment to a multi-year title window, an effort that was overseen by current Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.
