Not only is David Ortiz getting a bridge near Fenway Park named after him, he’s also getting his own street.

In somewhat of an unexpected move Sunday, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh walked onto the field holding a street sign reading “David Ortiz Drive” during the pregame ceremony honoring the Red Sox slugger before his final regular-season home game.

In a press release Monday, Walsh and Red Sox said the street under consideration for renaming is currently called Yawkey Street Extension, which was built in 2013 to connect Fenway Park and the new Yawkey commuter rail station.

Yawkey Way Extension, which links Maitland Street and Brookline Avenue, was intended to be a temporary name, officials said.

Officials noted that a pedestrian plaza along the street is lined with the retired numbers of former Red Sox legends. Presumably, Ortiz’s number will soon join them.

“David Ortiz is a true Bostonian and he embodies the spirit of our great City,” Walsh said in a statement.

“I am proud that the City of Boston is able to honor his career and legacy with the Red Sox and show our gratitude for all of his contributions to our community and beyond,” the mayor said.

The city’s Public Improvement Commission, which is tasked with approving street name changes, expects to hear the formal request before Opening Day 2017.
