Derek Jeter thinks it was “an absolute pleasure” to compete against David Ortiz.

The retired Yankees shortstop wrote that in a farewell note to the retiring Red Sox slugger in a book presented to Ortiz at Yankee Stadium Thursday night. Accompanied by wife Tiffany, daughter Alexandra, and son D’Angelo, Ortiz was given the book by retired Yankees (and former Red Sox) pitcher David Cone, along with current New York outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, Ortiz’s former teammate with the Sox.

Boston Globe Red Sox beat writer Peter Abraham got an exclusive look inside the book with its letters to Ortiz from current and former Yankees players.

“It was an absolute pleasure watching and competing against you for all these years,” Jeter wrote. “The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is the greatest in all sports. It is rivalry that I will forever miss and you were a huge part of it. I wish you all the best in retirement. Now it’s time for you to relax!”
