Morning Sports Update: Xander Bogaerts wants to get David Ortiz to the World Series
He's pretty good there, you know.
The Red Sox suffered a crushing walk-off defeat, then went into the dugout to celebrate an AL East title.
Xander Bogaerts proves why the team’s celebration was warranted after a loss:
Bogaerts on Ortiz: “We already got him to the playoffs…. We’ve got to just get him to the World Series. We all saw what he did in 2013.”

Yankees walk off with 5-3 win despite Clay Buchholz’s strong outing: The Yankees walked off on a Mark Teixeira grand slam after Craig Kimbrel loaded the bases and Joe Kelly surrendered the shot, but because of a comeback victory by the Orioles, the Red Sox clinched the division. The loss really fell upon the bullpen, but the offense was again thwarted by the Yankees pitching. One man who deserves absolutely none of the blame, is the resurgent Clay Buchholz. (NESN)
Rex Ryan gets testy with New England media on conference call for 2nd straight year: After his prank phone call to Julian Edelman earlier in the day, it was Rex Ryan’s turn to take on the calls for his media conference call. But the press conference took an awkward turn when Ryan was asked about once describing himself as an above average coach — even though his coaching record his 13 games below .500 since 2011. Ryan was predictably displeased. (WEEI)
Takeaways from the Bruins’ preseason loss to the Red Wings: It was a bad night for the Big Bad Bruins in a 5-1 loss to Detroit, the team’s second straight loss of the preseason. Malcolm Subban was in net for Boston, and the young goalie allowed four goals on 34 shots faced behind a defense that struggled mightily. Ryan Spooner was among the team’s few highlights from the disheartening loss, with a strong rush to set up an easy goal for teammate Austin Czarnik. (WEEI)
Jae Crowder ready for Celtics to take the next step: The Celtics are also just starting to kick off their own preseason, with practices and a lot of optimism. According to Bovada LV, the Celtics have the fourth-best odds to win it all next year, and though those odds are still long in the face of Lebron James and the reigning Cavaliers, the players are excited about the upcoming season with offseason prize Al Horford and third overall pick Jaylen Brown on board.
