Morning Sports Update: A winning Clay Buchholz says ‘I knew it wasn’t going to be bad all year’

Clay Buchholz looked great, the Red Sox soared past the Orioles for their seventh straight win, and the Patriots prepared for the Texans with a mystery at quarterback.

Clay Buchholz rewarding Boston’s patience during stretch run: The Red Sox rotation (with the exception perhaps, of Drew Pomeranz,) has been lights out since the All-Star break and a big reason for that success is Clay Buchholz’s turnaround. Clay pitched seven innings, allowing just a lone run to score on three hits, and the Red Sox got to a surprisingly effective Ubaldo Jimenez in the 6th when Sandy Leon reached on an error and Andrew Benintendi followed with a 3-run shot. Bill Belichick looks to continue winning ways against former colleagues: Bill Belichick has the deck stacked against him in tonight’s Thursday Night Football game versus the Texans, but one thing he has going for him, is a propensity to get the better of his former assistants. Tonight, he, and apparently Jacoby Brissett, will take on longtime offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien as Houston comes to town in a battle of two undefeated teams featuring young signal-callers. Playing could put Jimmy Garoppolo at risk for more severe shoulder injury: While the New England Patriots would be better served tonight with Jimmy Garoppolo on the field, it may not be in the quarterback’s long term best interest. Were he to be driven down on that shoulder a second time, he may need surgery to repair the damage, rather than just time. With a potential heir-apparent to Tom Brady on hand and looking impressive, will the Patriots risk that? (CBS Boston)

Bruins announce training camp roster, open practices: The Bruins announced a 54-man roster for training camp with the first conditioning programs beginning Thursday at the newly opened Warrior Ice Arena. While some of the veterans, including Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and Tuukka Rask, continue to participate in the World Cup of Hockey, for the rest of the team beginning to practice on Friday, with doors open to the public all weekend. Texans receivers could be a huge problem for the Patriots: DeAndre Hopkins broke out as one of football’s best wide receivers last season, and didn’t skip a beat with his new quarterback last weekend against the Chiefs. Joining him is rookie sensation Will Fuller, a speed demon who loves to beat defenses way down the field on deep routes. For a unit that struggled to contain the similarly talented tandem of Jarvis Landry and Davante Parker Sunday, is the secondary in trouble? (Boston Herald)
