Morning Sports Update: Don Orsillo on Sox opener: ‘It was good to see everybody’
Orsillo broadcasted a Red Sox game for the first time since being ousted last summer.
After scoring a combined 27 runs in the first two games this weekend, the Red Sox’ bats went cold in the latter two. But the team did get to see former play-by-play man Don Orsillo at his new gig in San Diego.
Don Orsillo ready to move on from Red Sox: “It was good to see everybody — Now it’s like another series”: Don Orsillo’s time with the Red Sox came to an unexpected end last summer when NESN elected to replace the well-liked Orsillo with Dave O’Brien, but the broadcaster is adjusting well to his new life in southern California and appreciated the opportunity to see a lot of familiar faces while the team was in town. Drew Pomeranz can’t stop former Padres teammates: In the first of a 3-game set with San Diego, former Padre Drew Pomeranz continued to pitch short of what the Red Sox needed from him, although, the team giving him just 3.50 runs per game of support doesn’t help. A 2-run home run to Adam Rosales proved to be all the Padres would need as the Boston offense was stymied for the second straight day. (Boston Globe)
Red Sox waste Eduardo Rodriguez’s gem, fall to A’s: The more heartbreaking loss was perhaps Sunday’s 1-0 shutout at the hands of Oakland, a game in which Eduardo Rodriguez carried a no hitter two outs into the eighth inning before a replay overturned an out and granted Marcus Semien an infield single. The A’s would walk off in the ninth after an imperfect outing from Craig Kimbrel was able to be taken advantage of thanks to a Brock Holt error. (Boston Globe)
Tom Brady is gone, but he still looms large in Foxborough: As Tom Brady’s suspension began this weekend, the Patriots didn’t hesitate to remind fans that though he would be gone he would never be far. After the team celebrated the last day of his suspension with a Labor Day barbecue hosted by Robert Kraft, the organization then displayed Brady and his number 12 on the light tower at Gillette. Andrew Benintendi could return next homestand for the Red Sox: In addition to a mostly-positive debut for Yoan Moncada, the other bright spot of the long weekend for Red Sox fans is the news that 22 year-old sparkplug could make a healthy return to the team before the end of the season after all. John Farrell said that the team does not have a specific date in mind but that Benintendi his making “very good progress.” (Boston Herald)
James Develin is trying to keep the fullback position relevant in the Patriots offense: Playing a position that has rapidly trended out of popularity among NFL teams, fullback James Develin is doing his best to prove his worth to the Patriots after a 2015 season lost to injury. He overcame the first hurdle by making the 53-man roster, and if he can open up running lanes, pick up the blitz in pass protection, and catch or run the ball when called upon, he could be a very valuable player.
