Red Sox being cautious with Eduardo Rodriguez
After being pulled from his last start with hamstring tightness, the lefty was a late scratch yesterday.
Having suffered through one arduous September, in 2011, the last thing the Red Sox need exposed is their lack of pitching depth.
After being pulled from his last start with hamstring tightness, Eduardo Rodriguez and the Red Sox indicated that the young southpaw’s injury was a minor one. Further, the team was so confident that they announced that Rodriguez would be Sunday’s starter, which made it all the more puzzling when the 23-year-old was a late scratch Saturday evening.
John Farrell explained the decision:

For now, the team will be cautious with Rodriguez, with no plans yet to place him on the disabled list. “I’d like to say there’s no concern,” Farrell went on to say. “But given the history we have to take that into account.” Farrell referred to the injury as a minor strain, but said the team would have to protect Rodriguez if he doesn’t feel he’s physically able to pitch.
He also said he is hopeful Rodriguez can make his next scheduled start:
Farrell reiterates that Red Sox are hoping Eduardo Rodriguez can return to make his next start. “We’re not gonna put a guy in harm’s way.”

After a 4-6 start to August, the Red Sox rattled off a 6-game winning streak and have won 8 of their last 10 overall. This is thanks in large part to the a reinvigorated pitching staff that has cruised to a 3.49 ERA in the month. The starting pitching has been even better than that, thanks in large part to Rodriguez’s 2.08 ERA in the month.
