Red Sox’s Andrew Benintendi, right, is congratulated by Dustin Pedroia after hitting a two-run homer against the Tigers in the seventh inning.

Less than three weeks after his first major league game, Red Sox rookie Andrew Benintendi hit the first home run of his career.

The two-run shot came off Tigers’ reliever Shane Greene with two outs in the top of the seventh inning at Comerica Park in Detroit.

‘‘That was pretty cool, especially because my family was here to see it,’’ Benintendi said after the game, according to the Associated Press. ‘‘I wasn’t sure it was going to get out until I saw J.D. (Martinez) give up on it. After that, I just wanted to run fast enough to avoid any trouble. You can’t jog on your first one.’’

The Red Sox called up the 22-year-old Benintendi from the Portland Sea Dogs at the beginning of the month. So far, he has a batting average of .322 in 59 at bats.

Despite Benintendi’s home run, the Red Sox lost to the Tigers 10-5.
