Big Papi may have crossed the line in the eyes of Major League Baseball.

At a press conference during the All-Star break in San Diego, Ortiz had this to say about the Sox lineup after he retires:

“The Red Sox know, also, that they need to bring force into the middle of the lineup. And, sorry Blue Jays, but who better to do that than Encarnacion?”

Papi’s comments might have been a poor choice in part because the Sox are in a tight race with Encarnacion’s Blue Jays for a playoff spot, but mostly because according to MLB’s rules and regulations:

There shall be no negotiations or dealings respecting employment, either present or prospective, between any player, coach or manager…unless the Club or baseball employer with which the person is connected shall have, in writing, expressly authorized such negotiations or dealings prior to their commencement.

Although Papi has stated he has no interest in being a manager when he retires, perhaps the Sox could look into giving him a job as a free agent recruiter when he retires.
