Dave Dombrowski: trades unlikely right now: After a lengthy meeting with manager John Farrell following the Red Sox’ 6-2 loss to the Rangers, Dave Dombrowski offered the media assembled a dose of reality.
“The thing you have to remember is that you have to have two clubs to make a deal, and most clubs, as I’ve said all along and it hasn’t changed whatsoever, really are not prepared to move towards 2017 and be in a position where they’re willing to move,” he said. “There are probably five clubs that have been looking at that all year long, and I think those five clubs are the ones that remain.” (WEEI.com)
Former Bruins coworkers are now fighting over the same players: Don Sweeney and Jim Benning used to be Peter Chiarelli’s lieutenants in Boston. Benning left his post under good terms when he became Vancouver’s GM in 2014. The Bruins booted Chiarelli out of Boston one year later. Chiarelli promptly resurfaced in Edmonton, where he played a part in his ex-colleague’s hasty decision to trade Dougie Hamilton out of fear of an offer sheet. (Boston Globe)
Buchholz takes loss, as Red Sox fall to Rangers 6-2: Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer for the Rangers, who are 11-0-1 in series since getting swept at Oakland in mid-May. Texas improved to 8-1 in deciding games this season. (Boston.com)

Messi says he may never play for Argentina again after penalty miss in Copa final defeat: Lionel Messi put his penalty kick over the crossbar, grabbed his shirt, clenched his teeth and put both hands over his face. A few minutes later he walked off the field, a dazed, pained look on his bearded face. The greatest player of his generation, perhaps soccer’s best ever, he was still without a title on Argentina’s national team. (Boston.com)

A deep dive into Kevin Durant’s free agency: The reason why Durant’s free agency is such a hyped and well-covered event is because MVP-caliber players virtually never become free agents right in the middle of their primes. Durant is 27 years old, and one of only a few players in the NBA who instantly changes the next eight years of some lucky franchise – the type of player who pushes a team to championship contention.
