John Farrell open to moving Joe Kelly to bullpen
When Joe Kelly returns to the Red Sox, he may not be coming back as a starting pitcher.
He posted a 8.46 ERA and 2.239 WHIP in six games with the Sox before getting demoted to Pawtucket Triple-A on June 2. He suffered a groin injury in his first start with the PawSox on June 8, and is still recovering from that injury.
“We’ve got to get him past the injury, but I would not rule out the potential of him being shifted to the bullpen at some point,” Farrell said Wednesday on WEEI’s “Dale and Holley.“
The Red Sox are still looking for a fifth starter in their rotation, and for the time being, that appears to be Roenis Elias, who will start for the Sox on Friday. Farrell said “there’s no timeframe” for Kelly’s return due to his groin injury.
Kelly would be the second pitcher from the Red Sox starting rotation to move to the bullpen, as the Sox moved Clay Buchholz on May 27.
