The Red Sox selected 40 prospects during the 2016 MLB Draft.

Their first selection at No. 12 overall was lefty pitcher Jason Groome, a high schooler from New Jersey who ESPN.com’s Eric Longenhagen believes is “the most talented player in the entire draft.” The Sox also picked a local college product in Boston College catcher Nick Sciortino.

The Red Sox selected two sons of team employees. Jordan Wren, the Sox’ 36th-round pick, is the son of senior vice president of baseball operations Frank Wren. Torey Lovullo’s son, Nick was Boston’s 20th-round selection.

During the 2016 draft, Boston picked 18 pitchers (14 righties, four lefties), 10 infielders, nine outfielders, and three catchers. The team selected 16 prospects from high school and 24 from college.
