Mookie Betts makes MLB history as home runs keep coming

That's five homers in two games.

Mookie Betts rounds third after hitting a home run during the first inning against the Orioles.

The Mookie Betts power surge continues.

After hitting three home runs against the Orioles on Tuesday, Betts homered in his first two trips to the plate at Camden Yards on Wednesday. With his prodigious output across two games, the Red Sox’ 23-year-old right fielder made Major League Baseball history.

For the second night in a row, Betts began his night with a leadoff home run. After depositing the second pitch he saw on Tuesday over the center-field wall, he sent the second pitch he saw on Wednesday over the wall in right-center field.

For the second night in a row, Betts also homered in the second inning during his second at-bat of the night. With Boston trailing Baltimore, 4-3, in the second on Wednesday, Betts’ solo shot to left-center field tied the game, briefly.

On Tuesday, Betts’ five RBI lifted the Red Sox to a 6-2 win. On Wednesday, his two homers — and the three by his teammates — were not enough to overcome shaky Boston pitching in a 13-9 loss.
