Red Sox to decide about Clay Buchholz’s spot in rotation as soon as Friday
Could Buchholz get booted from the rotation?
With Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez on the verge of returning to the majors from a knee injury, one of the current Red Sox starters will likely get bumped from the rotation. Clay Buchholz may be the odd man out.
He is 2-5 on the season, and his 6.35 ERA is the highest among Red Sox pitchers. He has also allowed the most runs (41) and home runs (12) on the team. Buchholz didn’t help his case during the Red Sox’ 8-2 loss to the Rockies on Thursday, as he allowed six earned runs and three homers. Following the game, manager John Farrell was asked if he would reassess Buchholz’ spot in the rotation.
“Yeah, Dave [Dombrowski] and I and [pitching coach] Carl [Willis], we always have conversations about every guy,” Farrell said. “This is no different. We know that Eddie [Rodriguez] is soon to … or ready, probably, to come back to us. There’s been no decision made as of right now.”
According to MLB.com’s Ian Browne, a decision could come as soon as Friday.
Buchholz is set to make $13 million this season, according to Spotrac.com. He has never started more than 28 games in a season during his 10 years with the Red Sox. His ERA is the second worst of his career, falling just below his 6.75 ERA in his second season.
“(I’m) not demoralized. The team’s still winning. I’m basically the only one that’s struggling,” Buchholz told CSNNE.com after the Sox’ loss to the Rockies. “The other guys are doing a really good job of picking up the slack that I’m leaving behind.”
