Joe Kelly didn’t look rusty.
In the Red Sox’ 9-1 win over the Indians on Saturday, Kelly made his first start since spending a month on the disabled list for a shoulder injury. The Sox righty had seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed no runs and just one hit, a double from Juan Uribe on Kelly’s final pitch of the day.
“Yeah, he pitched a beautiful ball game for us,” Sox manager John Farrell said after the game. “Powerful, under control, good command of his fastball. He threw enough of his secondary pitches to keep people of strides with — I thought — a sharp, breaking curveball. But expecting him to come back off of rehab, just a great day by Joe.”
In his previous start on April 10, Kelly threw only 23 pitches before leaving with his shoulder injury. On Saturday, he threw 104.
“He was going to be done after the seventh,” Farrell said of his decision to pull Kelly. “You’ve got to put personal accomplishment — he came back to us not because of a sprained ankle. It was a shoulder injury.”
