Watch MLB’s heartwarming video of Maverick’s bond with David Ortiz
Six-year-old Maverick Schutte isn’t your average Red Sox fan.
Aside from living 2,000 miles away from Fenway Park in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Maverick, who was born with a serious congenital heart defect that’s led to more than 40 surgeries in his life, is now buddies with his favorite player, David Ortiz.
Last month, the slugger taped a video for the inspirational young fan, pledging to hit a home run for him. He made true on that promise, and Maverick responded by sending Ortiz a video of his own.
“Big Papi, you never let me down, and you’re the best player ever in the Red Sox game,” Maverick said in the video sent back to Ortiz after the game. “And I’m trying the hardest to get out there at Fenway Park and meet you.”
And he did.
Maverick met and played catch with Ortiz before Wednesday’s game against the Oakland Athletics—and MLB Network captured it all in a heartwarming video it shared to Facebook Thursday night.
