A-Rod: David Ortiz is the Magic Johnson of baseball
"He is a large voice in our game and is one of the most prolific clutch hitters in the history of the game."
Alex Rodriguez came very, very close to paying David Ortiz perhaps the ultimate compliment in the eyes of Boston sports fans. He still managed to make a comparison that shows just how highly regarded Ortiz is by his peers.
“I came up watching Larry Bird and Magic Johnson,” Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez told ESPN.com. “To me, in many ways, he is our version of Magic Johnson. He is loved by everyone, respected by all. He is a large voice in our game and is one of the most prolific clutch hitters in the history of the game. He has been the centerpiece of three world championships. I can’t say enough great things about him.”
Friends since the 1990s when they were both with the Seattle Mariners, Ortiz and Rodriguez have had their ups and downs through the years. But it sounds like Rodriguez has only love for Ortiz as this point.
Still, it might have made Celtics fans a bit happier if Big Papi had been compared to Larry instead of Magic.
