Red Sox activate reliever Carson Smith from 15-day disabled list

The Red Sox activated relief pitcher Carson Smith from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, president of baseball operations David Dombrowski announced.

The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher had been placed on the disabled list on April 3 (retroactive to March 25) with a flexor muscle strain in his right forearm. He suffered the injury during a spring training appearance against the St. Louis Cardinals.

To make room on the 25-man roster, the Red Sox optioned infielder Marco Hernandez to Triple-A Pawtucket following Sunday’s 8-7 victory over the New York Yankees.

Smith was acquired by the Red Sox along with left-handed pitcher Roenis Elias in a December 2015 trade that sent pitchers Wade Miley and Jonathan Aro to the Seattle Mariners. In 2015, Smith posted a 2-5 record with a 2.31 ERA in 70 innings for the Mariners; he finished seventh among pitchers with at least 60 IP in strikeouts per nine innings (11.83).
