Watch: Christian Vazquez shows the Red Sox what they’ve been missing

Vazquez is an intimidating defensive presence.

Christian Vazquez still has a cannon.

In the second inning of the Red Sox’ matchup against the Blue Jays Friday night, Rick Porcello struck out the Jays’ Michael Saunders. Vazquez then picked off Troy Tulowitzki at first base to end the inning.

Friday’s game was the catcher’s first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery during 2015 spring training and missing all of the 2015 season.

The Sox called up the 24-year-old catcher on Friday morning after they optioned outfielder Rusney Castillo and catcher Blake Swihart to Pawtucket. Swihart played in six games during the 2016 season, but had moments where he struggled on defense.
