A photograph captured Pablo Sandoval’s apparently large belly at spring training on Sunday. But it seems that photo doesn’t tell the whole story.

On Wednesday at spring training, Sandoval told reporters he was at 17 percent body fat, down from the 23 percent he says he was at when he arrived for spring training last season.

Red Sox owner John Henry gave the same figures.

The Internet responded with some skepticism, such as when former New England Patriots tight end and current WEEI host Christian Fauria shared his body fat percentage on Twitter.

Sandoval signed a five-year, $95 million contract before the 2015 season. In his first year with the Red Sox, Sandoval had 10 homers and 47 RBI with a .245 batting average in 126 games.
