David Price says he ‘really needed’ that hug from David Ortiz

It sounds like Price was a little nervous when Big Papi arrived for spring training

David Price and David Ortiz have both said they are putting their personal disagreements behind them. But that didn’t stop Price from worrying about Ortiz’s arrival to spring training.

They greeted each other with a big hug on Monday, and Ortiz said “I got your back. Let’s roll.’’

Price was all smiles.

“I didn’t know what to expect, to be honest, and to me that was best-case scenario,’’ Price told WEEI.com on Tuesday. “I needed that. I really needed that. It was something, I might not have shown it, but it’s something I thought about extremely often, whether it was being in the training room or the weight room for an hour, and then coming back in here, ‘is he going to be here?’ Or waking up the next morning, driving to the field, is he going to be in the clubhouse? Is he going to be in the food room when I walk in there? What do I do when I see him? I didn’t know. I was just in limbo. It couldn’t have went any better, and I was extremely thankful for that and I told him that.’’

The two had a war of words in 2014 after Price pegged Ortiz.

Price said Monday he feared the tension could become a distraction for the Red Sox, but so far it has been smooth sailing. There’s no reason to believe the two won’t be solid teammates, if not good friends.

They Red Sox already staged a photo shoot for Red Sox Magazine that featured the two players laughing and smiling at spring training.
